Coral reefs harbor more than 25% of marine life, making them one of the ocean’s richest and most vital ecosystems. True guardians of biodiversity, they serve as nurseries, refuges, and food sources for numerous marine organisms.
Yet their role extends far beyond this: they act as a natural barrier against waves, reducing coastal erosion and thereby protecting shorelines.
However, since 2009, 20% of coral reefs have been lost, victims of bleaching caused by climate change. According to the IPCC, a 1.5°C rise in temperature could lead to the loss of up to 90% of coral reefs.
The disappearance of coral reefs would have devastating consequences for the environment, as well as for local economies and communities.
